I have a 1999 Jetta Wolfsburgh edition...often confused for a 1998. The car runs and idles fine in park or neutral. However, when you shift it into drive or reverse the car stalls. Letting the car warm up seems to help the problem enough to actually be able to get into gear and drive it as long as you accelerate quickly enough. I have checked and done basic tune-ups and there are no other problems with the car. Could the cause be a locked torque converter?...or something else?
