Can anyone recomend an older style 600cc sport bike?

Im looking to buy a 600cc sport bike. Since everyone says you will lay your first bike down i dont want to buy a brand new one. So does anyone know what kind of bike and what year would be good. The newer ones are more advanced then they used to be so im asking which bikes like 5 years ago had the best handling, gas mileage (what was the best overall 600cc bike a few years ago)?
 
Look for a Suzuki Bandit 600. They made them from 1993 - 2004, when they bumped it up to a 650. A fun bike, easy on the budget, but not so powerful that a sensible beginner can't use it as their starter bike for the first year or two of their riding career.
 
If you can find a late 90's FZR 600, id buy that.. it was a nice looking peppy bike, and they still make tons of upgrades for them, also, you can buy them today for 1500 to 2000 dollars...and 4 years from now you will sell it for the same price..
 
It doesn't matter how old it is, it's still a sportbike, and it's not for beginners. It doesn't matter which one has the best handling, because you, being a beginner, won't know the difference and won't be able to use it anyway. And if you're worried about gas mileage, then why are you considering a sportbike?!! It doesn't matter if an older bike has 10 or 20 hp less than today's one, it still has 90 or 100, which is 89 or 99 more than you know how (at this stage) to handle.

It was and still is a great bike. The seating position is really nice to. It has a sporty feel but sits a little more upright which makes riding longer easier.
