Can divx players detect avi files from external HDD?

Can divx players detect avi files from external HDD? What i mean with divx players are those dvd players we usually plug in to our TVs. I tried it before but it didn't work. I though maybe it needed two USB ports to power the HDD, coz my divx player only got one USB port. So I'm gonna buy a DC adapter to power the HDD.

Any advise guys?

It might, if the drive format is FAT, and the AVI files are the correct codecs for the player.
