Can I get an old Verizon fios DVR and use on my new account?

they charge 19.99 to rent their DVR, but my friend has one shes not using and says i can have it, can i use it and get verizon to activate on my account and not get charged the rental fee? i called and asked them and the guy kept sputtering about how it would be bad for my friend bc the boxes cost like $700 dollars. never answered my question.
