Can I install iOS 4 for iPod touch 3G on a 2G iPod touch?

I really want backgrounding etc. but Apple says iPod touch 2G is not supported! Can I install the iOS 4 Gold Master for iPod touch 3G on my 2G touch and just use Virtual Memory or something?

Umm I think you can install it, but I heard that the 2nd gen and "3rd gen" 8gb models can't have the backgrounds.

The reason I included the "3rd gen" 8gb is because the "3rd gen" 8gb model is actually a 2nd gen. No new hardware, no nothing. That's only on the 32 and 64.
