can I run a snowmobile without an air box?

I lost the cold air intake (air box) to a snowmobile, will it harm the engine to run it without or do i need to get one
 
it will keep dirt, snow, crap, crud, muck and whatever out of it for one..


for two, if it happens to be a 2 stroke, then it won't run right. 2 stroke motors use the intake just as much as the exhaust to run correctly..... don't really feel like getting into an exact explanation but 2 strokes need intake boxes....
