Can I subscribe to a cellphone line and switch cellphones later?

Like right now, I REALLY need to get a cellphone as I haven't had one for a while now. I also really want the new upcoming HTC Max 4G.
If possible, can I just go to T-Mobile, get a new free Sidekick 08 as for subscribing and then switch it to an unlocked HTC Max 4G when it's out in the states?
 
You sure can bro. It's as simple as taking your sim card from one phone and putting it in the other phone. Make sure that it's a phones for T-Mobile or unlocked.
