Can I switch my Sony Home theatre receiver with a non Sony receiver?

I bought a cheap home theatre set, but the receiver only has red/white in. I'm new to the home theatre scene, so I'm wondering if I can interchange different companies recievers with my Sony speakers and speaker cables. I need optical for my game systems.
