can I use a "HD DVD" or "Blue-ray disc" in my macbook for file storage?

I Have a very large collection of files and I am wondering how to store them permanently but not on my hard drive. the collection is about 35 GB of data and i thought that a hi capacity disc would suit my needs but i'm a bit unclear on the compatibility issue.
will I be able to store the files and read them later even though i don't have an HD/Blue-ray disc drive?
i'm not wanting to play HD video on the disc, just store the files to be copied back later.

any thoughts a greatly appreciated

You would need an external optical blue ray writer (very expensive) and even the disks are quite expensive. You can buy 32gb usb flash sticks for under £25 of a large ext. hdd i.e. 250/500gb for about £50.
Also doing it that way you can use files straight from the ext. drive where as you can't with a data disk.
