Can I use a LG Chocolate with my prepaid Alltel account?

I have a prepaid Alltel account, and my phone is broken. And you know how Verizon is merging with Alltel, but I also heard that you can't use a Verizon phone with Alltel... My boyfriend is going to give me his old Chocolate, but would it even work?

no, I spoke with customer service about the same thing and they told me that in order to use a Verizon phone you would have to switch over to a Verizon plan
