Can i use my gaming headset for my audio players (E.G. Blackberry, ipod)?

So my gaming headset broke and i was looking to get another one, and im looking for a headset that i can also switch from my Computer to my audio players (E.G. Blackberry, ipod). So my question is, if it has a "Detachable Boom (Mic)" can i also use it as headphones for my audio players? I know some headsets with detachable booms sometimes have usb's instead of 3.5mm (1/8th inc) cables but if i get a usb to 3.5mm adapter will it work or am i wasting my time?
