I cannot get cable from where I live and the cable company doesn't think it's profitable enough to hook me up. So my question is, what type of ethernet cable would I need, and how much it would ultimately cost me. I'm thinking a few hundred with either an exterior ethernet cable, or a regular cat 5 with pvc pipe. I would obviously dig holes about 1 feet deep to wire it underground. Is this illegal and even if I could get it all the way to the box, could the company hook it up?

Ethernet cable for a LAN is only guarantee to only work between 300-500ft.

To run a coax cable from your house to a pole, should be legal as long as its in your property. Right away, will be up to your county/city code.

It will be better to get a wifi card, and see if anyone is running a wifi router. If you can see it, approach the person, and make a deal with them if they have high speed internet access.
