Can Linksys router replace the Verizon's wireless router?

I am getting Verizon's DSL service, and they insist that I buy their "Gateway wireless router" to ensure the router's compatibility with the service. They said not all routers work with their DSL services. But I don't want to pay their shipping and wait for a week for their router to come. I am thinking of buying Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless-G Broadband Router at Best Buy. Does this Linksys's router works with Verizon's DSL service?
