I have the most up to date WMP and installed the all DivX components from http://www.divx.com/en/win, which includes a codec that allows WMP to play .avi files. This has worked for me in the past, although more recently I have been getting a fatal error that occurs when I seek to somewhere in the film (when I press the location of where I want to the film to play; the long horizontal bar near the bottom of WMP, just above the controls). The error message reads is titled "wmplayer.exe - Application Error" and reads "The instruction at '0x041bda3b' references memory at '0x050bc00'. The memory could not be 'written'. Click on OK to terminate the program; Click on CANCEL to debug the program". Also, the familiar "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and need to close" window comes up. A screenshot of the above-described error message is in the following link: http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.php?quickkey=ligjjmyuyzi.

Any help with getting the DivX codec to work on WMP would be very much appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

download k-lite codec pack and everytime you want to play something needing a codec a ffdshow will decode everything for you... works for any codec.

if you're american scrap wmp and get vlc
