while my sixteen-yr old son sleeps,
my twelve-yr old daughter
stumbles into the bathroom at six a.m.
squeezes into faded jeans
curls her hair carefully
strokes Aztec Blue shadow on her eylids
smooths Frosted Mauve blusher on her cheeks
outlines her mouth in Neon Pink
peers into the mirror, the mirror on the wall
frowns at her face, her eyes, her skin,
not fair.

at night this daughter
stumbles off to bed at nine
eyes half-shut while my son
jogs a mile in the cold dark
then lifts weights in the garage
curls and bench presses
expanding biceps, triceps, pectorals,
one-handed push-ups, one hundred sit-ups
peers into that mirror, mirror and frowns too.

Same song by pat mora

I think she is saying that she is busy all that with son and daughter and doesn't even have time to sleep. I hope this is the theme of the poem. (Same Song by Pat Mora)

understanding the poem is being able to live the poem. A young woman trying to fit in and find her place thinks she needs makeup and fashionable clothes. A young man thinks fitting is being the biggest and strongest. All in all not only those two young teenagers but all teenagers need to learn that everyone is different. Between shape, size and color. We are who we are no two of a kind. Be proud of who you are.

this is it!

ur in guise's class! ur cheatin and im tellin on YOU! and these people aren't even right!

its about two kids who try hard to be what our generation thinks they need to look like. the son wants to be ripped like the men on some shows and in magz. girls in our gen want to look like super models by haveing the latest style and the best makeup because its what they belive our society expects but, they need to learn that they can be what they want to be no matter what any 1 says as long as they are content with them selves because in the end its all that matters. hope this helped

Not only is the poem about a young girl and young boy trying to fit in, it is about their preception about how they think they are failing. The allusion to Snow White "...looks into that mirror, mirror...not fair", suggests that while they are working so very hard to fit in, they do not see what they want.
The title also suggests that they do this as a routine, as in it is the same song and dance each day.
The poem comments about the pressures put on young teens to fit in, but also talks about how the most pressure comes from ourselves, and as long as we are trying to make ourselves appear to be someone else, or fit a style that isn't ours, we will always come up short.
