can you load xbox 360 games through an external hard drive?

im being sent an xbox 360 that supposedly isn't reading games well and im new to having an xbox 360 and i want to know if i can load my games through an external hard drive?

and would i need to soft mod it to do so?

As long as your external memory unit has a usb outlet it will be able to plug in to your Xbox 360 and read the data on the memory unit. I use this method with a memory stick and I can save games, music, and whole accounts onto the memory stick then load it right back onto the xbox 360 without any problems.
