Can you solve this riddle?

A father gave his three sons their allowance a total of $17.00. To make it a challenge he said that the oldest got half the money, the middle one gets one-third of the money, and the baby gets one ninth. However, it must be in even dollar amounts. How did the boys solve this one?

That doesn't add up. Isn't that:

half = 9/18
third = 6/18
ninth = 2/18

That's only 17/18. Dad is a tightwad. He's keeping an eighteenth of the $17.00.

However, to answer the question, they solved it with a calculator and by getting dad drunker.
