Can you use elements from other's stories for your own?

I've been thinking about making a crossover story and putting it online. But what if it contains elements and a few parts from another person's story? And only in the beginning. The rest would be completely original. I like their story, but I want to see what it would be like with several major differences and an actual ending. Do I need their permission first? Or do I just give them the credit for that part?

PS: The story in question is from fanfiction.com.
