Capturing Video from a DVD?

In short, I would like to capture some video from various DVD movies and put them all together to run in a clip. I have never done it before and would like to know if there is some software out there (that won't cost an arm and a leg) where I can run the movie on my computer, capture the scenes I want, put them together and perhaps even add my own music to the compilation. Since I have no experience at this, the software would need to be fairly easy to use. I have a laptop running XP Professional with 2 GB of RAM and a Pentium 1.7 GHz processor. I also have a desktop with 4 GB of RAM, 2.4 GHz Pentium Processor running Windows Vista. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I think a dvd to video converter can help you to solve this problem.Check it out!
 
I think you should use a software to do this,like Totle Screen Recorder,which i am using now.
It suits for recording movies both on the desktop and laptop!
You can shut dowm the voice of your movie, and play your owm music.
Also, it is compatible with Windows XP and Vista.
