...the starter or the solenoid? Its a 1986 Ford LTD. I am pretty sure its either the starter or the solenoid, but I'm not sure which.

You know the sound your car makes when you turn the key to "crank" after it's already engaged? That's the noise that happens every time it starts. Sometimes I have to bare that noise for a couple seconds before it starts.

I'm going to attempt switching them both myself tomorrow, starting with the solenoid. Any tips are greatly appreciated. Wish me luck!
 
Sounds like the starter could be some worn or damaged surfaces on it, or the flywheel!
