I am looking into buying a nissan altima & the owner has just informed me that it needs a new valve cover gasket - they claim it is a simple thing to fix, but for all I know they could be lying. I don't know much about cars, & what I do know isn't about nissans. How expensive would it be to have that repaired?
It's a 1999, I made a typing error.

Repairs are very expensive now but back ten or more years my husband mechanic charged a flat one hundred dollars just to take that cover off. So if it is just the gasket needing replaced the price of that repair shouldn't be to terrible.
My suggestion to you is this, spend the $35.00 to take it to a mechanic who is certified, and have him go over the whole car to see if it has any hidden problems that isn't being disclosed to you. Better to spend that 35 dollars than get stuck with a car that needs thousands of dollars in repairs before you can trust driving it anywhere.

valve cover gaskets is normally only a 15 to 30 minute job and around 20 to 30 dollars to buy. i would have no problems buying a car if that is all that is wrong with it.

As a guess, $100 or so sounds about right at a repair shop. It is one of the easier repairs on most cars...
