try to check your fuses on the amp. they may be to big or to small. i would say a 25 fuse is the right one. but thats what it sounds like to me. to big or to small of a fuse wont allow the right current to run through ur amp. thats why it will come on for a second and go off, because its getting the wrong levels of current going through it.

Apparently DJ doesn't really know the purpose either.
Too big a fuse is dangerous, as it will not blow when there is a power surge, potentially allowing your equipment to be overloaded, NOT protecting it.

Anyways, to the point.
It sounds like your amp is going to protection mode, and the cause of that is most commonly an improper ground. This can be fixed by making sure your ground wire is securely attached to your frame, or a bolt attached to your frame (seatbelt bolt, etc.) and making sure there is NO PAINT on the metal in the area you are grounding as this can cause the ground to not make a proper connection, if that doesn't work, check the fuses. Finally, it may also just be a faulty amp, and need to be replaced.
