...their religion? It seems to be very easy to unintentionally offend people in matters concerning their religion. Why is it that so many people seem to think that you should treat their religion with 'kid gloves'?

As an example, check the additional comment made by Stina here (this refers to Catholic beliefs which is why I've asked for opinions from Catholics);

The 'please don't joke around because it offends me' comment can only apply to my answer - which I considered to be a serious answer to a question that I thought interesting (and had already starred).

It is a fact that many people used to believe that geese hatched from barnacles, and that some catholics used to eat them on fast days because they didn't consider them to be meat so why take offence? (some original sources quoted here; http://scienceblogs.com/evolvingthoughts/2006/08/tales_of_the_barnacle_goose.php )

Is the fact that I said that I liked my answer more than the correct one really that offensive?
Jay; Calling someone names is not the same as jokes - besides I'm talking about people taking offense when 'joking' was perceived but not intentional.
Newell; Whether true or not that has nothing at all to do with the question - are you somehow offended that I asked it?

Anyone care to comment on my example?
