I have a 1998 toyota 4runner SR5 with a little over 300,000k miles on it. I have serviced it monthly on time every month, had a mechanic check it out a couple weeks ago, he said that everything was running smoothly for its mileage and I drive it carefully knowing how many miles it has. I also changed the fluids last week, including the oil. About 2 days ago I started hearing this clicking sound coming from underneath the car. I revved the engine a couple times and the sound is coming from right underneath in the left center, it almost seems like its coming from the muffler. My car is still running fine, all the belts are new, and the sound isn't coming from the engine. Does anyone know what this could be? (By the way, the clicking sound gets faster the faster I drive.)

Check your shocks, if your car is over 100,000 mi then its probably time, That was the issue with mine.

get a friend to press down the accelerator while you listen outside the car down near the ground. if the sound speeds up while you are in park, and seems to run faster with more throttle, then it could be exhaust.

If the exhaust is loose and rubbing against the drive shaft, it could still be that, but wouldn't increase in speed until the shaft is spinning.

Speaking of U-joints. It's always been my impression that a car in park isn't spinning the drive shaft, hence the ujoints wouldn't be ticking when its in park. Are you hearing this tick only when you are in gear and moving? Then I like the Ujoints theory as well.

Lastly. What kind of service does your car require every month? You don't need to change oil monthly unless you are in extreme conditions or drive more than 5k miles a month. that's a lot of driving.....
