A family member was diagnosed with psoriasis a year ago and was on dovobet cream and betnovate scalp application, also aqueous cream for bathing.
Although not very widespread, the psoriasis has flared up a bit recently and was starting to spread to other areas. He went back to the GP who has stopped the Dovobet and the Betnovate and has given him Coal Tar solution 20% instead. He has been told to put the solution directly on the skin, not in the bath.
This stuff absolutely stinks to high heaven and stains everything it comes into contact with! Surely there is a more modern alternative to this, a coal tar based cream or something?
Is this still a standard treatment given out to people with psoriasis or has treatment moved on a bit?
I would be grateful to hear from anyone who has had experience of this and could give any suggestions.

Thank you.

Hello! I have psoriasis, and i use the coal tar stuff. I love it, it is THE best thing out there for it. Yes, it smells, but having used it all my life i actually like the smell!! I was born completely covered in it, i was red when i was born! Icky, but, having spent the first 3 years trying everything, we moved to a new town, and the new doctor put me on coal tar. Now, i don't have any patches of it. None. When its time to get a new prescription, i have to 'brew' up a patch by not using coal tar (i have to prove i still have it despite it being incurable!!!)
I have never noticed any actual staining, though. I use biological powder, this eats away any greasy stains...but your family member may have very sensitive skin....(during my worst years my mum had to hand wash all my clothes, and then drip them into a vinegar solution and drip dry them.)
Coal tar is woth any negatives, as its a miracle cure.

my gf is a sufferer and swears by T-Tree......anything with t-tree.... shower gel, moisturiser! if she has a flair up using this every day for a week helps her immensley. Remember everyone is different so what might work for one, might not work for another, but give it a try - its not medicated as such so cant do any worse! good luck

In boots there is a tar bath range..shower gels, bath soaks, n bath salts..they are sooooooo amazing!! They should also ask the doctor about light box therapy it is similar to sun bed but no where near as harmful, sun beds can add further to the problem trust me!! x

The main cause of psoriasis is overreaction of the immune system. I try to eat healthy food and avoid stress as much as I can in order to prevent flare-ups.
After using number of prescription drugs I've turned to the natural treatments.
Now I use herbal remedies from serenaskin.com, which aim at the root of the disease - the immune system, and are steroid-free.
After about 2 weeks of using ointment and spray my skin has been cleared up and now I just continue with anti-psoriasis extract, which controls the immune system. My skin has been clear for months now.
It is the only treatment I have found that provides me complete relief when I use it as directed.

My boyfriend had really bad psoriasis. He was put on dovobet but as you can only use it for a short period of time due to the steroids in it, the psoriasis flared up after he stopped using it. He uses coal tar shampoo sometimes, but it's not very good.
The best thing he did was sunbeds. I'm not promoting them, and I wouldn't really use them myself. But my boyfriend used them once a week for about 6 weeks and the psoriasis is nearly completely gone

As such there is no cure for psoriasis, but in some places they apply tar on the infected place and bind it with cloth. It's supposed to suppress the symptoms. Not hot coal tar.
