Communicating without wireless signal or internet connection over long distance?

My girlfriend will be away for the summer and i'm trying to think of ways for us to stay in touch. But the area she's in is pretty remote, and she won't get cell phone signal. She has pretty limited internet use, and so far it looks like mail will be our primary form of communication.

Any economical suggestions for us to keep in touch?
