converting files for DVD?

is there a way i can convert file types like .avi to be burned onto dvds and played in dvd players?

i'm not sure what an avi file is honestly,
but what i do is convert all my files to wmv and then normally i'll use windows movie maker (assuming u dont have a mac) to fancy em up a bit more and then burn to a disc.
