Could an Atheist and a Catholic be friends?

My sister is a Catholic, as am I, and she is becoming friendly with who we recently found out to be an atheist. I really don't have a problem with it. But, my sister isn't sure if it would be a 'sin' to our church to be involved with one who doesn't believe in what is the sole purpose of our beliefs. Would it be a problem?
