could i buy a motorola zoom instead of a laptop?

I want to know if i could buy a motorola zoom without a verizon 30 /month plan wich would cost 800 for the tablet, or should i buy a 800 dollar laptop?? All i basically need to do is surf the web and some other stuf.....
