I'm really not one for superstitions, but I try to be a respectful Christian, and respectful to the ancestral culture of my family (Aboriginal) as I understand the power in both. I am still a growing, learning, young Christian and was never raised on much Aboriginal culture (I am multiracial).
My problem is that I have a peacock feather in my room that is a sentimental token of a memory of mine from a time I worked at a great wildlife park in a town I used to live in. I think it's beautiful and want to keep it as it means a lot to me.
However, my Nan (who is a Christian Pastor and of Aboriginal descent) advised me to get rid of it because in Aboriginal culture it is 'bad luck' and in accordance of this she suggested my bad health (ill for past 2 and a half years) might have been prolonged due to this (I've had the feather for 2 and a half years). I've researched it and it is commonly said that the peacock feather is bad luck and invites evil into your home. I don't believe in superstitions and don't agree with a lot of Aboriginal culture, though on the other hand, close Aboriginal people to me have recounted personal brush ins with Aboriginal superstitions and I don't truly believe the whole culture is airy fairy per se.
In the Bible all I have found is that one mustn't have false idols and such things as ouiji boards in their home. So it seems ok but at the same time wonder if the feather is categorized as an object that invites evil and I shouldn't have it? My mum says the peacock superstition is nonsense and that all God's creatures are beautiful and are not "evil" in any way, and that Aboriginal ancestors only say the peacock feathers are evil inciting because they were a foreign animal. She also said that God does not tolerate other cultures' customs and that by following them is to give power to them and disrespect God.
SO I have prayed and asked for a sign as to whether it is God's will that I keep the feather or get rid of it and am waiting. It all seems so silly but I understand that there are forces that I do not understand working around us and I don't want to be "caught out". I do strongly believe in the ways of God and have experienced the power of Aboriginal culture, though I must admit I find the latter very confusing and often intimidating.
What do you think I should do BASED ON MY BELIEFS?
I choose God above all but I do not want to be affected (be it by some crazy nonsensical force or by the psychological workings that make me believe such a thing).
I request that you show respect and not answer if you only plan to criticize the beliefs of others. If you are against my beliefs and still for some strange reason want to answer then perhaps consider viewing it as a comprehension exercise based on what I have given you.
