Defense and action against rumor-mongering?

How do you defend yourself when you suspect someone is spreading lies about you with intent to ruin you personally and damage your reputation to those you know? What actions to do when you finally learned who this person is? Is this a felony?

You can sue them for defamation of character but you have to prove that they intended to hurt you. These cases are difficult to prove.

The main thing is, don't take things into your own hands like trying to get even or hurt them because if you do, you can be in big trouble. Either get a lawyer or let it go.
