are atheists a small minority in USA? We've been reading predictions of the end of religious influences in the U.S. for many decades now. (Remember the "God is Dead" headlines of the 60's?) Yet, while many would argue that "secularism" has been on the rise, every demographic study has shown that atheists remain a small minority. Why have the predictions of U.S. trends been so inaccurate? Why so few atheists in the U.S.?

Wow. There is actually doubt that atheists are a small minority in the U.S.! Amazing. (Of course, denial of reality is a favorite pastime on R&S.)
Last I recall, Barna hit something like 12% (higher than most studies) and Harris said 8% -- but if someone is so certain that my presupposition is false, I recommend that you check the documentation for yourself because you obviously won't believe me or anyone else if we are casting doubt on your favored viewed. (Do you REALLY think that atheists aren't a small minority? Or just exercising wishful thinking? Or perhaps you should pray for higher numbers!)
In any case, my question wasn't asking for a debate. I was simply asking WHY -- despite all of the education and science which many speak about as ushering in a new wave of "enlightenment" -- is there such a small atheist population in the U.S. That was my question. (It is not that difficult to comprehend.)
