directv receiver error message. authorization has expired?

I rented this receiver from directv for years until they quit billing me for it. my account with them, however, still shows the unit and the card on file but there is no charge. Now, suddenly, when I turn that tv on, the receiver says authorization has expired please call customer service 722. Does anyone think that they are suddenly gonna try to charge me for something that I should be getting for free or could it be that we have to pay for a more current access card in the receiver every so many years.
re: billing me. / not billing me. they said I had paid on them for so long that they now belonged to me. As far as updating the cards, any idea how much that costs and is this something I should pay for if I am no longer having to pay rent on this receiver?

They just finally got around to deactivating it. If it kept working for awhile after they stopped billing you for it, you were lucky ;)

They charge for those things, it's not something you "should be getting for free" unless your plan says the receiver is free. And yes, you need to update the access cards periodically.
