Dirty dishes scent making me gag... help?

So my friend said she would pay me to clean her house this weekend while she's away, but I had no idea what i was getting into. The rest of the house is manageable, but the dishes... OMG. The sink is filled with dirty dishes, with lots of food resin still on the plates/bowls. You can detect the smell just walking into the kitchen. I promised my friend I would do this, but just approaching the sink to start washing a dish almost made me throw up... i've never smelled something so awful. Ugh.

Spray some kind of air fresh. Then soak the dishes in bleach and then just hot water to get the bleach off

Fill the sink with hot water and put in some Dawn or other dishwashing liquid and let it all sit for a few hours. The stink will subside and the residue will come off more easily.

maybe fill the sink with hot water and something that won't mess up the dishes but that will help dissolve the stuff like ammonia or bleach.
