I have a problem when playing a video file on my 512MB Dual Xeon 3 GHz File Server (Windows Server 2003) to my 512MB Pentium 4 HT 3,6 GHz HTPC (Windows XP) over a 100 Mbit LAN from a Router to a Switch. During playback, once or twice the image will freeze, and I can hear audio. I click back a minute and it corrects.

I didn't have this problem when using a Hub, (I had other problems, that necessitated replacing the hub). I have used two different routers, and three different switches and the problem persists.

I have no problem if I just copy the video file over inside Explorer to the desktop and play right off the local hard drive.

Any suggestions?

Some suggestions:
- It won't be a quick fix, but if you have a crossover cable then you can connect your computer and server directly and see if the problem persists.
- try another player like videolan (vlc)
- try copying a large file from your server to desktop and see what the speed is. If your copying speed is less than 1mb/s then it might be
- if possible, check to see what the port speed is set on your switch and on your computers. make sure they all have the same setting; auto or 100mb or 1gb. Most often a misconfig between devices can tremendously slow down your link speed.

good luck,
Patrick
