Do all Blu-ray players need updates?

It will be a part of Blu-Ray ownership for the foreseeable future.

Even Samsung BDP-2500's and the just released Panasonic BDP55K require updats out of the box before we install them.
 
I bought a SAMSUNG BD-P1500 and we couldn't play some of our blu-rays. We had to download updates, burn them and play them in the player. The sales people never told us about these updates. Is this the case with most players, and if so why?
