Do DVD Players need cleaning? If so, what's the easiest and most efficient way?

I just realized I've had my player for about 8 years (ancient!!) and i've never cleaned it. It's giving me issues now and I'm wondering if i should replace it or try to clean it...

maybe i can still use it as a back up in another room...it still works about 8 times out of 10...
