Unprotected sex can spread HIV. Therefore anyone who has unprotected sex has the potential to contract (and then spread) HIV. I think that the reason the rumor about gays spreading it more has to do with the fact that anal sex may make it easier to contract that vaginal sex; however, many straight people engage in anal sex and many gay people do not.
