do i have to have the old ds or ds lite to update my r4i sdhc for my dsi xl 1.4.1?

im buying a dsi xl in christmas,but i dont want to waste money buying games,so i should buy a r4i sdhc,but someone say i have to have a ds or ds lite to up grade the firmware or whatever it is to 1.4.1
because dsi xl have 1.4.1
IS IT TRUE>?
