...trade it in? I found out my '02 VW GTI needs a new timing belt plus some other necessary work done to it to keep it going a little longer - approx. $1400.00 worth. There is also other work that will need to be addressed eventually totaling approx. $3500.00. I took the car to a different dealership than was doing the repairs and asked what they would give me on a trade in without telling them all of the work that it needs. My wife thinks that's wrong but i think it's up to the dealership to do their own due diligence. Thoughts?

If you were buying the car you would be expected to carry out your own inspection and tests. Usually with the help of a motoring organisation. It works both ways so say nothing.
