Do kids give superficial compliments to adults instead of saying hi? My wife says 10 kids walked by her office and said, "oh, nice skirt." but no adults do the same. After the 9th kid, my wife got the hint that these kids didn't mean it. She works in a place with both kids and adults. Is this a new thing?

I'm not a kid, and I do it. I mean it though. It's how I was raised as a Jehovah's Witness, to greet someone warmly and often that would be with genuine compliments!

I don't think it is new thing. These kids may have been taught the importance of compliments. Generally people appreciate compliments whether sincere or insincere but feel bad if you criticize them sincerely and constructively.

That's a generalization. I don't do that. But than again I'm not a kid.

No, on the contrary, kids nowadays use insults as greetings. I know because I am a teenager. For example...

Teenager 1: Hey 'sup?
Teenager 2: Go suck ****.
Teenager 1: Fag.

I'm serious, that's how people greet one another these days. It's stupid.
