And I don't mean some topics being more taboo in one place than in another (for example, raunchy sexual jokes possible being less appreciated in a more conservative or religious part of the country). What I mean is whether the very understanding of what makes something funny or humorous, and/or whether the internal logical structure of humor is different. Also of course whether the style is different.
I grew up in Northern Indiana. I went to law school in Southern Indiana, but my law school has a very geographically diverse student body (only 40% were from Indiana). I noticed that my sense of humor and my attempts at levity seemed to be misunderstood by a lot of people from outside the Midwest. There was a lot of awkwardness. Moreover, even the locals of Southern Indiana (which, culturally, seems to me to be more Southern than Midwestern) seemed different in their sense of humor from the Northern Indiana residents I used to live among.
I thought perhaps it was just my imagination, or that maybe I was just awkward, regardless of who I was around. Anyway, one day I overhead a couple of natives of Boston talking, and one of them said it was good to meet another Boston native. The other agreed, and talked about Midwesterners and their strange sense of humor. So clearly it isn't just me.
Anyway, if you have noticed this yourself, let me know. If you've been more perceptive than me, let me know what exactly some of the differences are.
