The psychologist William James defined religion as "the feelings, acts, and experiences of individual men in their solitude, so far as they apprehend themselves to stand in relation to whatever they may consider the divine".By the term "divine" James meant "any object that is godlike, whether it be a concrete deity or not." With that in mind I believe nationalism can be considered a Religion.

Yes a false religion meaning that the people who follow it,which includes many ministers who stand beside an American flag during their sermons,are actually worshipping the government and its policies of mass murder and blasphemy against God. :stop glass:
Yes and no.
On one hand, nationalism, as well as Naziism, Soviet Communism, and for that matter MOST political sentiments, are as feeling based and irrational as religion.
On the other hand, it starts to become an abuse of language if you aren't a little tighter with your terminology. It sort of makes language meaningless for communication if you go down that path. Sure, once in a while, to make a point, but don't make a habit out of it.
