Does labeling one self a certain religion, make them a 'better' person necessarily ?

do you need to follow a religion to become a 'better' person ?

or is this a load of old tosh ?

reason I ask this , is that some of the nicest people I have ever met are those who did not follow a faith strictly and weren't all that religious.

Some of the nastiest vile people i've ever met have attested to being 'muslims' , sorry to have to point that out - but I observed how much 'b/s' these ppl could potentialy get away with by hiding behind their faith.

This to me means that religion is not essential in attaining anything good in life, and I honestly don't think for a second reciting a koran will benefit an individual on all planes of personal development.

Is it impossible to have 'good people' on earth who are atheists/non-religious/faith-free ?

P.S - if you're an intelligent open minded liberal person you will realise this question in no way is slanderish to muslims, just 'people' who hide behind a faith and use it to get away with doing awful crap.

i dont thinkit matters either way.a good person is a good person. i think certain ideas from some religions can make you a better/happier person, but you dont have to follow that religion. i like alot of ideas from LaVeyan satantism but i dont label myself a LaVeyan satanist

Your religion doesn't make you better than anyone. No one is better than anyone no offense. Many people believe that their religion makes them better and that's just total b/s. Don't pay them any mind because they are just ignorant.
