She may not be the most favored Queen- in fact, there are plenty of people that would give a leg to see her head on a pike- but the King Louis’s wife has definitely dipped her feet into the waters of Fashion!
Mary Antoinette. The name sends thrills and chills down much-praised fashion guru Steven "Cojo" Cojocaru.
“I see her, one day, wearing a gorgeous dress,” Cojo says, “She walked into the room and, my goodness, my heart was fro-zen. The dress was a beautiful blue; lightening, electric. Whoever designed the dress captured that color so exquisitely. Her skin stood out like a lantern in a really, really dark room. She was glo-wing!”
Antoinette’s dress was all the rage during the weeks that followed. But the flames did not flare for long. The fire that followed Antoinette’s dress was extinguished shortly after a portrait, which was only available exclusively to royalty and nobles prior, of Her Majesty was released to the public.
“Of course, in the fashion world I am royalty,” Cojo says, “So, being my important self, I saw it before everyone else did. When I laid my eyes on the portrait I… I could have cried.
Cojo pauses to collect himself, “I know Antoinette. She’s like a sister to me; she really is, so I kept hush-hush about it. But all in vain! Now it’s out and about that the Queen is walking around in that abomination.”
‘That abomination’ was a red, puffed sleeved, hooped low cut, Victorian-era dress that sent Paris in an uproar. AKA long, red and ugly.
“I feel like my eyes are bleeding,” says Madam Bouillabaisse, famed fashion stylist.
“This is the eighteenth centaury,” sneers an anonymous, yet wise, critic who wishes to avoid the guillotine, “Someone tell her we’re not experiencing another Renaissance movement. Fashion isn’t going to change anytime soon, so she should just throw those sad little rags into the furnace.”
What will she wear next? Fashion followers are biting their nails, waiting and anticipating for Antoinette’s next big début: HER EXECUTION.
“It’s the moment of her life, and she knows it!”” cries Cojo, “The whole fashion is just dying to know: WHAT WILL SHE WEAR?”
