I have a 46 inch samsubg with 1080p and 120hz refresh, and my sony home theatre system is 5.1 chanell(model DAV-HDX275) but its not a blu ray player, but will an hdmi make a picture quality difference? also, the hdmi will replace the yellow rca that goes from dvd player to t.v because theres no need for a red and white fir it, will I still get surround sound?

The HDMI cable is a much better cable, it can handle the video and audio in one cable and also the higher resolution than the yellow rca cable you are using. You also need to connect an optical audio cable from the tv to your home theater if it is equipped with one. This will allow you to hear the tv through your surround sound system. Keep in mind that only those tv program with the Dolby Digital Logo will have the surround sound information. Hope this will help you out.
