Does the school day start when the child arrives at school or when the first bell...

...rings? If a student arrives at school and leaves before the first bell rings to get to class should they be required to sign out? Or should they only be required to sign out if attendance has already been taken for the first class. This is for middle school age and I am looking for other parents perspectives on this.

In my son's middle school, when you walk into the school, you cannot leave without a parent. You would not get out of the school, it is in lock down. But the day starts with the bell.
