Driving: Wave gesture.?

Say... on a T intersection. A car is trying to enter the busy main road, sometimes I stop and signal them to let them cut in front of me, they do the wave hand gesture. But if the situations are reversed (they stop and signal me that I could cut them), I dont do the wave hand gesture (one hand on the wheel, one on the center arm rest). Is that rude or no? A simple explanation would be nice why/why not.

Never stop to "be nice" and allow the driver from a side street to enter. You have the right of way. In California it is illegal to slow or stop for persons waiting to enter your through traffic lanes.

Take it the right of way and continue. The person entering may be a nut case and you will certainly mess up the flow of traffic, possibly with disastrous results. Never assume that the other driver is an expert. Waving to others is highly overrated. Drive your own car and drive like you are "going somewhere", as opposed to just wandering along at less than normal speeds.

I always wave back. The driver is just saying Thank You for allowing him to go ahead of you. I think it is rude not to gesture back.
