I have a somewhat vague idea for a novel I would like to write. I know that it still needs some fleshing out, but I'm at a block about how to develop the basic plot some more and make it... darker and more twisted, I guess you could say? Here's the basic summary:

In a world where humans and creatures coexist in different realms, the demons of an underworld-like realm have used their collective powers to break free, where they have been imprisoned for the past 50 years or so.

That's all I have, as the idea is very new. I have no idea how to continue it on! I think that having a group of "chosen" people come up and defeat the darkness is a little cliche an boring, but I can't think of another way. Any ideas at all are appreciated, and thank you so much in advance!!

What if you did have a "chosen" group of people, who seem to be the good guys, killing off the dark demons, or whatever, but make the story about how one of these "chosen" people realizes that what they are doing is wrong. The world needs darkness, just as much as it needs light. Perhaps not all the demons could be bad, you don't have to make them sissy, goody characters. At the same time, there could be some that are really bad, and do need to be stopped. The main character could try and stand up against his people, making them the antagonists in the end. He could also feel conflicted, or confused about what is right and wrong, and determining which demons he should and shouldn't slay, and why. You could make it dark if you had them killing innocent ones in brutal ways, and the evil demons causing serious harm. Twists could be made all over the place. The main character could be tricked by one of the demons he thinks is good and lets live, or something for example.
-just an idea, I hope it helps.
