I wonder if any one can help me I have a fiat multipla that I bought 2 months ago. It has been working well until 2 weeks ago. My husband drove the car and noticed a sqweaking noise when he pressed the brakes. He assumed the break pads needed changing. Next time my husband went to use car again . He drove to shops fine. But when he came back to car and tried to drive home. He found the brake pedal very hard and almost impossible to push down and could not turn steering wheel. After a bit of pumping he got the brakes working and was able to drive slowly home. But now at home. The same thing. The brake pedal is so hard you can't really press it down. The pedal is this hard when engine is off and My husband was thinking perhaps the brake servo or master cylinder has gone. But when you switch the engine on the pedal does drop a tiny bit but can't be pressed.
We had the car towed to a garage this week to be looked at and they say it is the gear box and that the car needs a new gear box. I find this strange and hard to believe though as you can change gears fine, there seems to be no problem with the gears. Could it still be the gear box, how could the gear box cause the brake pedal to go hard and the steering to go funny. Can any one explain to me. Are the garage right or are they trying it on. Should I get a second opinion. Also they have quoted £1500 for a new reconditioned gear box plus labour. This seems a lot to me. What do you think. The car in manual gear box 1.6l engine. Petrol if this helps.

Any advice would be much appreciated

Thanks in advance
Thanks for your reply, yes the only symptoms (problems) we have noticed is the brake pedal really hard, can hardly press it and the steering a bit funny. The car pulls to one side when you try to drive it. I had thought also about a seized calliper as well and that would cause the problems I am having. I think I'll get the car taken to another garage for a second opinion.
